Jira MCP Connector for AI Agents

Connect your AI agents to Jira over MCP: search issues with JQL, read sprints and comments, and create, update and move issues in your connected Jira site.

Connect a Jira site once in ApexGenius, then search issues with text or JQL, read issues, sprints and comments, and create, update, move and comment on issues from compatible AI agents. Each AI agent needs its own ApexGenius setup.

Why the gateway is here

It keeps the Jira authorization, tools, and activity behind the same managed route you use for your other supported systems.

Connection model

How to connect Jira.

The Jira connection belongs to your signed-in account. Any Jira-native resources stay inside that provider.

Read connection details

Before you start

  • An account with permission to use the Jira resources you intend to connect.

1. Connect Jira to ApexGenius

  1. Open Jira in Connections. Choose Connect, or Add connection when offered. Give the connection a name if prompted. If Gateway setup pending appears, contact ApexGenius support before continuing.
  2. Choose the account and review access. Sign in with the intended Atlassian account. Choose the Jira site and review the permissions before returning to ApexGenius.
  3. Review the connected account and resources. Check the connected Atlassian account and site. On the Tools tab, review any project resource controls. The Jira permissions of that account still apply.
  4. Check the connection. Use Test connection or Check again and read the reported status. Add an AI agent from the AI agents page, choose Read only for the first test, and try the question below.

2. Choose your AI and finish setup

Each guide includes the AI setup and a first question for Jira.

Current governance

Know the account, tools, and result.

ApexGenius keeps the selected context and current tool surface visible, then records supported write activity for review.

Authorized context

The connected Atlassian account and its Jira permissions decide which projects and issues can be reached.

Current tool surface

Creating, updating, moving and deleting use the access granted to that account.

Reviewable activity

Enabled writes run immediately. Turn a tool off to block calls.

Disconnecting stops future access. It does not undo an issue change, a comment or a deletion.

Why a gateway

24 operations. Three tool definitions.

Your AI starts with three ApexGenius gateway tools. It discovers the Jira operations available to its authorization when a task needs them, then runs the selected operation through the gateway.

One saved provider connection

Connect Jira to ApexGenius, then authorize each AI client to use the saved connection with its own tool permissions.

Scoped per agent

Give one client read-only and the write operations never appear in its tool list at all.

Every call on the record

Which agent asked, what ran, and whether it succeeded, kept per connection for review.

FAQ

Questions people ask before connecting Jira.

How do I connect Jira?
Open Jira in ApexGenius Connections, choose Connect, and sign in with the Atlassian account for the Jira site you want. You do not paste a Jira API token.
Which projects can my AI reach?
The projects the connected Atlassian account can already see in Jira. ApexGenius never widens that access.
Can my AI create or change issues?
Yes. It can create, update, move, comment on and link issues when your Jira permissions allow it. Enabled writes run immediately. Turn a tool off to block calls.
Can my AI delete issues?
Deleting an issue, a comment or an attachment is marked destructive on the tool list and cannot be undone. Turn those tools off unless you need them.
Can I start with read-only access?
Yes. Choose Read only when you add your AI agent, and the write tools never reach its tool list.
