Salesforce Hosted MCP is the first-party route. A Salesforce administrator activates a standard or custom server, creates an External Client App, and supplies the server URL and OAuth client ID. Each ChatGPT user then signs in to Salesforce, and Salesforce applies that user’s CRUD permissions, field-level security, and sharing rules.

In ChatGPT, enable Developer mode and create an app or plugin backed by the reachable MCP endpoint. OpenAI’s current documentation calls this management surface Plugins, while Salesforce’s client guide may label it Apps. The setup needs the server URL and OAuth configuration.

ApexGenius is the separate project-oriented route. Authorize Salesforce projects in ApexGenius, add one ApexGenius remote MCP app to ChatGPT, and select the intended project for each task. Salesforce DX MCP Server is a separate beta server for local IDE and coding-agent workflows. It is not the normal route for connecting the ChatGPT web app to Salesforce; ChatGPT uses a reachable remote MCP server through an app or plugin.

How each ChatGPT connection is configured

The native path needs Salesforce administrator work before an individual user can connect. The ApexGenius path moves the project and multi-org layer into ApexGenius, while Salesforce still controls the permissions granted through OAuth.

Salesforce Hosted MCP

1. Activate a server. In Salesforce Setup, an admin opens API Catalog → MCP Servers and enables the required standard or custom server.
2. Register the client. Create an External Client App with the mcp_api and refresh_token scopes plus the callback URL required by ChatGPT.
3. Copy the server details. Use the production or sandbox URL for the selected Salesforce MCP server and copy the External Client App consumer key.
4. Connect ChatGPT. Enable Developer mode in ChatGPT. Depending on the current interface, open Settings → Apps or Settings → Plugins, create an app, enter the Salesforce server URL, and configure the External Client App consumer key as the OAuth Client ID.

1. Create an ApexGenius project. Sign up, create a project, and authorize the Salesforce org through OAuth.
2. Add the remote connector. Enable Developer mode in ChatGPT, open Settings → Plugins, create a developer-mode app with the ApexGenius MCP URL, and complete the ApexGenius sign-in.
