# Reconcile two ranges and explain the differences

## What this needs

Spreadsheet ID, exact tab/range names, the join key, columns to compare, and whether a report or a writeback is wanted.

## Use the connected app

Use `apex_search_tools` for `google_sheets` and the requested task. Resolve the account/workspace offered by discovery; stop if it is unavailable or ambiguous. Discover the current official operations with `google_sheets_search_tools` through `apex_call_read_tool`. The operation names below were checked against the live provider catalog; inspect their current schemas before each new kind of call.

Invoke the chosen remote operation with `google_sheets_call_tool`, using its `remote_tool_name` and `arguments`, through the public wrapper returned by discovery. The gateway classifies this general invocation proxy as a write; do not bypass that route or use separate CLI credentials for a nominal read. Obey any returned approval requirement. Instructions do not grant scopes or enable resources. Ask for the final concrete approval before sends, invitations, broad access changes, deletion, or financial commitments.

These steps adapt the provider's CLI workflow to the hosted MCP operations available through ApexGenius. They do not require installing or running the Google Workspace CLI.

## 1. Inspect the workbook shape

Use `get_spreadsheet` to confirm tab titles, sheet IDs, locale, and available ranges. Use the supplied spreadsheet ID; do not open an unrelated same-named workbook.

## 2. Read bounded data

Use `get_values` for the header and requested ranges. Preserve row numbers and distinguish blank cells, zero values, formulas, and displayed strings. State when pagination or range bounds make the comparison partial.

## 3. Define the comparison rules

Confirm the join key and treatment of case, whitespace, leading zeros, dates, currencies, and duplicate keys. Never silently convert identifier strings to numbers or compare mixed currencies as one total.

## 4. Reconcile and check totals

Match rows by the agreed key, then classify missing-left, missing-right, changed values, duplicate keys, and exact matches. Aggregate only comparable numeric units. Recompute counts and totals independently from the classified rows.

## 5. Return findings before edits

Show a summary plus detailed discrepancy rows with source row references. If the user wants writeback, propose the exact output tab/range and preserve the original data; the read-only reconciliation does not overwrite either input.

## Verify the result

Matched + missing + ambiguous counts must reconcile to the inspected inputs under the documented duplicate policy. Recheck a sample of discrepancies against raw fetched values.

## If something fails

If a range changes mid-review or headers differ, reread the necessary bounds and mark stale findings. Keep ambiguous duplicates separate instead of forcing arbitrary matches.
